History

The department was opened in 1984 and the founder teacher was Late Dr. Nishi Kanta Deka who was a distinguished alumnus of college. After serving in this college for long 20 years he joined as the Principal of Suren Das College, Hajo and L.C.B. College, Guwahati respectively. However, unfortunately he passed away before his retirement. Dr. Sudarshan Choudhury joined the department and after serving for 17 years shifted to Gauhati Commerce College, Guwahati. Now the department comprises four young teachers- Dr. Bagsmrita Bhagawati, Chavan Kumar Sarmah, Hrishikesh Mazumdar and Madhab Saha The department has opened Major course from the academic session, 2015-16.

Research Project Details

Dr. Bagsmrita Bhagawati had completed one UGC sponsored MRP in 2013 on Some Aspects of Health Scenario in India, A Statistical Analysis. Chavan Kumar Sarmah has completed a UGC sponsored MRP on A Study of Gender and Fertility of the Nepali People of Gohpur Sub-division of Assam in 2016.

Facilities

The Department has one laptop with INTERNET facilities and a small departmental library. The Department organizes academic activities for the benefits of the students. The teachers of the Department offer informal counseling to students from time to time.

Activities

Statistics department regularly organizes group discussions, seminars among the students within the department. The faculties of this department offer informal career counseling to students from time to time. Occasionally the department organizes field trip or exposure visit for students to various places.

a) TDC (Only Major) : Major course introduced from the academic session 2015-16 only.

N. B. The students with Mathematics at the HS level will also be allowed to offer Major in Statistics if they do not have Statistics as an Elective subject at the HS level.
