The department of English came into existence in 1966 at the time of the establishment of the College. Joy Prakash Sharma was the founder teacher of the department but he did not continue for long. Then Munindra Narayan Goswami took charge as the Head of the Department and continued to serve till his retirement in 1997. He has been honoured with Literary Pension by the state government in 2015. He was initially assisted by Dilip Kumar Das, Nabin Chandra Kalita, Satyen Choudhury, Dr. Dayananda Pathak, Gunindra Nath Choudhury, Kirity Sinha and Rabindra Bhattacharyya. However, Das, Satyen Choudhury and Sinha left the department early to take up other assignments. Dr. Dayananda Pathak served here for a few years then joined elsewhere. Mr. Kalita served for a considerable period of time and then joined as the Principal of newly established Bhawanipur Anchalik College in 1989. Gunindra Nath Choudhury served sincerely for a long period of time till his untimely death in 2005 before his retirement. Rabindra Bhattacharyya joined as a tutor initially but, after the confirmation of his job, remained here to serve for long 38 years to make the Department what it is now. In between, some other teachers also worked in the Department for brief periods. They are Hemen Das, an alumnus of the Department who subsequently got selected for Assam Civil Service, Swaraj Boro, Chandra Devi, an alumni who got selected for Assam Civil Service, Pabitra Mohan Devta, Dr Bishnu Charan Dash, who, after serving here for 18 years, joined Assam University (Diphu Campus) and Lakhipriya Gogoi, who halted here for a year to join Dibrugarh University. The current sanctioned strength of the Department is six. Abul Hussain Khan, the retired HoD, is a distinguished alumnus of the Department while Dr. Dipmani Das is a rank holder in the HS Exam in 1992 from this college. Dr Sultan Ali Ahmed is also an alumnus of the college. He was elected an Assistant Secretary of Assam College Teachers' Association (ACTA) during 2011-13. Currently he is the Co-ordinator of IQAC, B. H. College and during his term as Co-ordinator, B. H. College has been accredited 'A' grade by NAAC. The Department had organized a national workshop on the problems of terminology in literary criticism and linguistics in 2009 in association with the Assamese Department and in collaboration with Anundorum Barooah Institute of Language, Art and Culture (ABILAC). The Department organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar on 'Reading Shakespeare in the 21st Century' in August, 2016.

The Department has a spacious faculty common room where the students can freely meet the teachers and discuss their problems. It has a laptop with internet connections and one Departmental library. LCD projectors used in the common class room are shared by the English Department. The activities of the English Literary Society are governed by this Department. Under this society, the students can organize various programmes for their benefits. A magazine titled 'Spectrum' is also published occasionally by this society.


The Department teaches English literature to B.A. students in Major and General classes, Communicative and functional English to the B.Com. and B. Sc. students. The Department arranges group discussion, classroom seminar etc for the students. Occasionally, film shows relating to the texts are arranged.
