This Department came into being in 1966 at the time of the establishment of the College and initially it was under the charge of the founder Principal Sri Satya Nath Das. Later, Dilip Ranjan Dutta, Jatindra Kumar Borgohain, Hangsha Ballav Choudhury, Arabinda Chandra Kalita, Jadabendra Biswas, Sudhir Chandra Debnath, Birinchi Choudhury, Budhen Kumar Saikia served in this Department. Among them, Borgohain, Birinchi Choudhury and Saikia left the Department before the completion of the tenure to take up assignments elsewhere. Hangsha Ballav Choudhury served a long period of time and died while he was still in service. The rest have retired on the completion of their services. This Department had organized a UGC sponsored National Seminar in 2006 on the topic- Rural Development through Women Empowerment with special reference to the North-east. The department also successfully organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar on the topic Water Use for Sustainable Agriculture on 20-21 January, 2016. The department organised a UGC sponsored Workshop on Research Methodology and Computer Application in Research in June, 2017. From this department Anamika Das (2009) and Rupam Talukdar (2013) have secured 1st class 1st in B. A. Final Examinations.

Research Project Details

Dr. Rabinjyoti Khataniar had completed one Major Research Project sponsored by UGC in the area of Irrigation Development in Assam. Besides, he had completed two Minor Research Projects sponsored by UGC and KKHSOU. Presently, Dr. Khataniar has completed one Major Research Project sponsored by ICSSR in the area of Resource Economics. Ritul Talukdar is working on one Minor Research Project sponsored by UGC on the topic Job Satisfaction of Primary School Teachers of Char Area of Assam.


The Department has one laptop with internet facilities and a small departmental library. The Department organizes academic activities for the benefits of the students. The teachers of the Department offer informal counselling. The department has a forum called The Centre for Economic Forum and Planning which organises seminars, educational tour and mentoring services to the students. The department also organises National/ State Level Seminar/ Workshop funded by UGC, ICSSR etc.


This department is involved in the teaching of Economics for HS, UG and PG Students covering the students of Arts and Commerce Streams. Besides, it shares some responsibilities of Environment Studies along with Botany and Zoology departments. It also brings out a wall magazine to accommodate write-ups of the students.
